PROJECT 3B-2 - TxDOT has awarded the largest contract yet for contruction of a project on the I-69 Corridor in Texas. The $695 million project is the second in a multi-project program to rebuild the freeway system flowing through central Houston.
Known as Project 3B-2, the work area covers about 1.5 miles of I-69 from the intersection with SH 288 north to the intersection with I-45 on the edge of the city's Midtown area. The reconstruction of this complex set of roadways will include a trio of signature bridges crossing the depressed freeway at Elgin, Tuam and McGowen Streets. Work on Section 3B-2 will begin in 2025 and continue until about 2033.
DRAINAGE PROJECT - A groundbreaking ceremony was held in September 2024 on Houston's Project 3B-1, a $121 million underground drainage facility that will follow St. Emanuel Street running parallel to I-69 as it passes the George Brown Convention Center and Minute Maid Park. It will carry stormwater from the freeways north to a detention pond and then into Buffalo Bayou. It will include a pump station at the south end adjacent to the I-69/I-45 interchange. The drainage project must be completed before adjacent freeways can be rebuilt, a process that is expected to get underway in about 2032.
